Coldstream Guards have shown 'courage and resolve' on frozen 400-mile march south to Barnet

THE commanding officer of a company of soldiers who have nearly completed a 400 mile march from Scotland has praised their courage and endurance.

Major Colbey thanked all those who had donated so far to the marchers' cause through the Just Giving website, at www.justgiving.com/coldstreammarch.

Donations are still welcome.

The Coldstream Guards have marched 25 miles a day over the past three weeks from Coldstream in the Scottish Borders to Hertfordshire to recreate an important historical moment, and to raise money for soldiers injured and killed in war.

The march follows the exact route taken 350 years ago by a regiment from Coldstream in the Scottish borders, when they were instrumental in the restoration of the monarchy.

The regiment was originally part of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army but changed sides after he died and his son was nominated to succeed the dictatorship he had created.

In January 1660 the regiment started their march south to London to assist Charles II to accede to the throne.

The regiment became known as the Coldstreamers, and Charles II reformed them as the Coldstream Guards.

Number 7 Company is based here, in London.
